This is a bleeding-heart claim made by many who don't seem to understand
that _Crossposting is bad, m'kay?_
"Bleeding heart", eh? Not my idea of a "bleeding heart" subject since
I go along with the definition of "bleeding heart" as: someone who is
excessively sympathetic toward those who claim to be exploited or
underprivileged. I don't think newsgroup posters fall into the
exploited or underprivileged category by virtue of simply being
newsgroup posters. Unless they are Australian women, of course.
It is an established principle that you do not post in a newsgroup that you do not read and expect any sort
of reply.
It's also an established principle that writers use line breaks (to
cause what we call "paragraphs") in order to break up blocks of text
into readable sections. But who does that, hunh?
It seems that what we "establish" works for us, but just doesn't put
down roots with others.
People who drop queries into alt.usage.english and ask for an
e-mail reply are rightly treated with scorn.
Agreed.
It may even be in the FAQ
file somewhere (something read a whole lot more than RFCs, most likely).
If you post or crosspost into a newsgroup and fail to look there for a
response, you deserve none. If you post or crosspost into a newsgroup,
you proclaim to all the world that you will look there for any response --
that your legal intention is to look there for any response. Whining
little babies who cannot be bothered to do so deserve no pity. If there
is any claim at all for any validity for any crossposting ever, it comes
with a duty to look for any responses in the newsgroups crossposted to.
I dunno. I certainly don't go along with the Hinesian cross-postings
that bring in six or seven groups; none of which have a particular
interest in the subject matter. However, I don't see a problem with,
say, a post in both alt.usage.english and alt.poetry.buffs that
questions if Mr Cummins preferred his name written as "e.e cummins" or
as "E.E. Cummins". The resulting replies from both groups can
contribute to the interest of the thread.
I'm in the "selective use of cross-posting" camp.
Worse even than crossposting one's own work oneself is _subsequent_
crossposting without permission of someone else's work. I own the
copyright in my own writing, and I specifically do not give permission for
it to be crossposted afterwards to a newsgroup that I didn't post it to.
*That* would be depriving a poster of possible replies.
A choice you certainly can demand of others, but I think it's sad to
deprive other groups of your detailed and accurate descriptions of
routes to take in the Greater Laurel area. There might be someone in
another group that would like to drive from Anacostia River Park to
the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and take a photograph of the
roller coaster at the Jolly Roger Amusement Park on the way. I can
think of no one else who could supply adequate directions with side
notes on how the Valentine family members have contributed to the
structures along the way. That's good stuff.
