The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) supports Dr. Rex Curry's
discovery that the swastika was used by the Nazi Party to symbolize
meshed "S" letters for "socialism."
Oh, what the hell.
Where do they support it? The words "socialism" and "letter" do not
appear anywhere in the OED's entry for "swastika", which they cite in
relation to the Nazis to 1932. The _Los Angeles Times_ was writing
about "Fascist swastika emblems" used by Nazis in 1930, a full year
before the OED cites anybody using "Hakenkreuz" in English. The OED
says only that it is
the form of a cross with equal arms with a limb of the same length
projecting at right angles from the end of each arm, all in the
same direction and (usually) clockwise
Absolutely nothing about socialism or the letter S. They define
"Hakenkreuz" as only "the Nazi swastika".
