You could be mistaken, Charles. "Lads", or "the lads", is quite often
a reference to members, sympathizers, and hangers-on of the IRA.

Just today, in a soc.culture.irish thread under the subject of "The
Sopranos resembles the IRA" the following post appears:

What a fooking magnificent return of the inside deviations of a family
that puts survival of their kind foremost.

Comparisons/Contrasts with "the lads", anyone?
