You've used this "in effect" trick three or four times now. I can see
it's a very useful device when the actual facts do little if anything
to further your case. I think I'll start using it myself, not just
here, but out in the real world too. The next time I'm told by a
little old lady that no, thank you, she doesn't need any help carrying
those heavy bags, I propose to report the event by saying, "She told
me in effect to go *** my mudda."
