In case anyone is interested, those remarks are mainly (and fairly
consistently):
(1) that said video is an excellent one,
(2) that the woman and her niece visible on screen are exceptionally
intelligent and capable,
(3) that at one point on the video after the baby's off-screen mother said
to the baby's on-screen aunt, "She likes the white one," the baby reached
for the white toy, *probably* said, "I like that [one]," picked it up, and
did substantially what her aunt had been doing with it, and
(4) that the on-screen aunt sat back after the baby grabbed the white one,
watch her manipulate it and then *certainly* said (in synchrony with
movements of breathing, jaw muscles, mouth (hard to detect, but not easily
confused with dramatic lip rounding), and a vertical fold at her
neckline), "You can do it, too."
I had previously (years ago) said something to the effect that the woman
had mentioned the baby's name early on, but Mr. Cunningham provided
satisfactory evidence that that was not so. I was wrong about that part.
I am sorry for the error.
I had once hazarded an observation that the woman had made *no* detectible
lip movements while saying the sentence. More recently I noticed (in
Internet simultaneity with another observer [one who had studied
linguistics at a selective university, and whose observation powers are
better than mine] independently noticing) that there were indeed barely
noticeable movements at the corners of her mouth during the
"rounded" vowels of the sentence, consistent with Bob Cunningham's
description of his own "microrounding" (my term, apparently scorned by
him). So I was arguably wrong about that aspect of my observation for a
while. I am sorry for the exaggeration. One pixel may not seem like much
to *some* people, but it's not like me to miss it.
I had also mentioned that the things I described were hard to spot and
that I had had to expand the video to full screen and put the sound at top
volume to pick it out. I do not disparage those who might miss them,
though it would be a shame if Bob Cunningham were to allow the video to
fade away when it might contain his first great-granddaughter's first
words, but I have no reson to believe he is that foolish, however much he
may disagree with me on some points.
If I'm foolish for saying things like these, I guess I can live with
it. If Mr. Cunningham is inclined to keep the video available for
interested disinterested observers, I would be happy to hear of it.
I can assure Mr. Cunningham that I am not "merely baiting" him, and that
my statements are intended to relate in large part to evidence of
English-usage matters discussed on this newsgroup from time to time,
whether actual lip rounding for vowels described by some linguists as
"rounded" or early acquisition of English usage skills in babies. Any
annoyance it causes him is merely a bonus that I can live well without.
I can also assure him that I have no particular desire to make myself
appear foolish (though appearing utterly humorless is also not a goal of
mine), but admit that I don't hog issues that have easy answers and do not
hesitate to take on an issue just because I'm the only one willing to take
a particular stand.
