The North American squirrel is larger than Australian or Asian
squirrels. Its diet consists mainly of acorns, which gives the flesh a
delightful flavour.
Was this gray, red, or black squirrel?
The Wikipedia article says that the American gray squirrel is _Sciurus
carolinensis_, while the red squirrel is Tamiasciurus hudsonicus_.
They imply that the black squirrels in the northeast are actually a
variant of the gray, but they also say that there are "black
squirrels, appearing to be identical to the red squirrels in the area"
are common in Iowa and Nebraska, so I don't know what sort the black
squirrels here in the Bay Area are.
