Fair enough. I'm sure a Russian would agree that our [lj] is not
sufficiently "soft". Still, IMO, the L of words like "million" is still a
third allophone, which most native speakers are not aware of when they
speak. It is formed in a similar way to the normal intervowel L, but still
isn't quite the same.
I know Russians from Petersburg, Moscow and Baku. In the north the sound is
sometimes like chewing potato chips - a distinctly greater husk, more
modulated in the capital, and a soft murmering in the south. Same as in UK.
