So, today I'm asked what the phrase "increase in granularity" means.
It's a phrase that I dimly recall using myself, back in my student days
when such buzzcrap was de rigeur. I was on the point of giving the
fellow my interpretation ("to increase the visibility of ever finer
detail"), when I was moved to look up the meaning of "granularity".
Turns out it means:

So, logically, "increase in granularity" means an increase in the
quality of being composed of relatively large particles, or more
likely, an increase in the number of such particles.

It suggests to me that someone once determined a scale, a measuring
stick, a range of degrees, in which a higher number meant "more
granularity." Whether those numbers corresponded to the size of the
particles or the number of particles in a region would have been set
then. Sometimes scales like that are counterintuitive, like for nails
and wire -- the bigger the number, the smaller the size.

Or possibly, the quality of being composed of increasingly large particles....

It's the same problem I have when someone refers to a "larger scale map"...I
have to stop for a moment to remember whether convention dictates that this
means a larger map to cover the same territory, or a map of the same size to
cover a larger area...(to save people the trip, it's the former)....

Well, actually, it doesn't have to be a *larger* map. The piece of paper
or the square on the screen could be the same size or smaller. What
changes is the, uh, scale.

"Large scale, great detail." It's a mnemonic that works, I tell ya.

But sometimes I have to think twice when matching that to "Zoom In" and
"Zoom Out."
