As emigrants from England to the US, we were rather stunned (and I, for
one, was very much offput) by the massive flag displays over there. I
still find it a bit odd to see the huge flags flown by used car dealers
and hung at ice hockey rinks and such there. My classmates in high
school there found it odd that I didn't jump to my feet during pep
rallies (another bizarre institution) to salute the flag as it passed.
I was nobody's idea of a rebel, I just found the whole thing supremely
-- odd.

The incomprehension was on the other foot, so to speak, when I
explained to young friends in China that the UK has no National Day in
the style of that now celebrated in the PRC. 'But what's wrong with
patriotism?' asked one, very sweetly... and no, I don't want to get
into the ensuing discussion, it's all too depressing.

where it often seems to manage to rain on national day even though it's
in the middle of the summer; on the other hand, the air force flyover
is practised for several days beforehand right over my office, which is
an impressive way of breaking up one's afternoon
