Thank you, Purl Gurl, for reminding me why I really shouldn't be
spending time on Usenet.

I'm not sure what keeps me coming back, newly here and elsewhere for a
long time. Idleness, mainly, and looking for the 13 human connections
social scientists say we need to make each day in order to feel
grounded.

The one thing that's sure is that rolling, sick feeling you get when
someone has decided to carve up every apple looking for the worm and
it's your turn <g>.

What a goofy addiction argumentativeness is. I'm off to find my local
meeting!

I'm not sure if Christine is still there, but it appears to me she has been posting via Google Groups. I have long felt that among the other drawbacks of that method is the lack of any killfile capabilities. I don't see how anyone could stay in a group like this without filters (although I suppose someone will come along and tell me that they manage).

Yes, I don't bother. I have filters in my head. I worked in an environment full
of annoyances and conditioned myself to respond to irritations with amusement
rather than rage. I have worked the same trick while driving, though it took
some time.

How I wish I could manage to do that! I seem to get more and more tetchy and it's very wearing. Do you have any useful tips to pass on?

One of the keys to this is realising that in some cases the technique disarms the other side, and in others it annoys them beyond belief, either is a good result.

(I'm not God though - it's easy on the internet where you can have as much
breathing space as you want.)

If the likes of PG don't get to you, you can do what you like with them. Answer,
poke with stick, or ignore.

I'm not averse to stick-poking occasionally, if I fancy playing to the gallery, but the responses are so very predictable that it soon becomes boring.
