Does my excuse sound reasonable?

Very. But have you come across the theory of counterphenomenological resistentialism?

This offers a very plausible explanation of why we lose things - it isn't our fault at all. I'm not so convinced by the authors' planet theory, though. Somewhere in our house (possibly behind the airing cupboard) there is a black hole which has swallowed a great many things. Since these things had all been carefully stashed away for future use (for example, birthday cards and presents bought in advance, replacements, such as light bulbs, for things likely to wear out) this suggests to me some uninvestigated relationship between anti-matter and the "safe place". Developing this idea is, of course, causing concomitant distraction, leading to further losses when things spot an opportunity for escape.

It'a a hard life but at least Bob's back.
