All the references in this thread seem to have been to the phrase
'direct deposit' which I'm not familiar with. BrE usage between
employer and employee is 'bank transfer' (except when it isn't, I
suppose).
Salary payments here (UK) are typically made through BACS
http://www.bacs.co.uk/BPSL/corporate/banks/
which I see is a distinct business run largely by the banks. I don't
remember what the initials stand for - Bankers' Automated Clearance
System, perhaps. I use it for electronic funds transfer - it is cheaper
than writing a cheque, in bank charges, and very reliable. I can log on
to my bank's web site and set up payments to any UK bank account if I
know the account name, number, and probably the sort code which
identifies the bank branch.
My payroll agency has an authorisation from me to use BACS on my behalf,
and on about the 25th of each month (but they post early for Christmas)
they initiate the transfers and mail the printed pay slips to my staff's
home addresses. The staff haven't been given any option to be paid
otherwise.
