It seems the surname 'Wiuff' is pronounced like 'view.' Is there some reasonable basis for this?
Not reasonable, perhaps, but...
"The English people is impatient of useless detail and strict logic and has an innate gift for improvisation and "muddling through"...It is to these characteristics thet we owe the almost complete disappearance from English of all inflexional machinery which still encumbers the other European languages, the replacement of grammatical gender by natural gender, the freedom and looseness of syntax and *our obstinate retention of spelling which sometimes fails completely to represent the sound of the spoken word.*
