My octets are all in the range 0-127.

check out these strings
"\033(RR\173pertoire, en fran\134ais.\033(B\n"
"How about some \033(Zespa\174ol\033(B?\n"

(note: \0xx and \1xx are 0-127. 128-255 would be \2xx and \3xx.)

Just because you have an 8-bit newsreader that can't understand 7-bit
codes doesn't mean i shouldn't use proper 7-bit codes on this 7-bit
medium.
