I understand that practice started during the war to enable listeners
to identify individual news readers, so that any unknown newsreader
would be under some suspicion as a German plant, until proved
genuine. One such was Wilfred Pickles, whose Yorkshire accent,
although considerably toned down, was considered too difficult for
the Germans to emulate.
