Sure -- anyone with a threading newsreader can tell which article
another one was posted in response to. That still doesn't mean they
should need to; and remember, it may be one that they read the day
before, the last time they read the newsgroup. In any case, what
they can't tell which *part* of the article is being responded to,
unless the relevant content is quoted. That may not be an issue
if the previous article was very short, but it's still helpful to
quote properly.

The other thing that's being going on with this anonymous poster
is that his or her followups have had the [=SDC=] tag removed from
the subject lines, which breaks things for people who try to use
it for its intended purpose of automatically selecting or killing
SDC threads. I've restored it for this posting, since the issue of
selecting on the tag is itself SDC-relevant.

Is this change also an effect of using Google Groups the wrong way,
or was it the poster's misconception that the tag is noise, or is
something else going on? I remember that there are some posting
agents these days that strip all tags that end with a colon, apparently
on the assumption that they must mean "Re:" in some foreign language
(in turn a response to a posting agent written by someone who didn't
understand that in this context "Re:" is a fixed string), but that
doesn't apply to [=SDC=], as it's not punctuated that way.
