Amplifying my previous post.---There must be an exception when the
object is a clause, as these sound OK to me:

I saw yesterday how tall the turkeybeards were.
I saw yesterday that the blushworts were blooming.
I saw yesterday where you'd planted the parsley.
I knew then how all the voters felt.
I knew then that all was not lost.
I knew then where all the flowers had gone.
