I get the impression a) that foreign-born film directors may formerly
have had the idea that older-generation Americans often sounded
rather British, and b) that a small minority of real Americans
actually _did_ up to the '60s. There's also the Mortenssen
phenomenon: you assure me that in LOTR he was using his native NY
accent, while I figured he was probably not British but using a
pretty well standard classical-actor sound. (On accent, I wouldn't
have placed the Australians in LOTR as Australian, either; but most
or all serious Aus actors can do "classical" RP with little or no
effort.)
