I would hope that it would download temporarily and execute
on the user's computer, effectively disappearing from there
after execution. But I guess all I really want is for the
slide show to execute upon one mouse click without the user
knowing or caring what it's doing in detail.

Thanks very much. That sounds quite promising. But I need
to learn more about it. People have different meanings for
"slide show". I mean by it a file that when executed will
show each of a group of pictures for some period (say five
seconds each) and automatically step from one to the next.

I'm not sure what you mean by "automatically change the
picture", but I suppose that could be it.

Using ACDSee, I get a slide show with buttons that
1. Toggle between start and pause.
2. Stop, and return to the beginning.
3. Step back to the preceding picture.
4. Invoke a menu from which you can select by number
any picture in the show to display next.
5. Step ahead to the next picture.

I think the last three apply only if you've paused the
automatic action.

When you generate the slideshow, you have the option of
causing the buttons, plus the cursor, to disappear after a
second or two and return only when the mouse is moved or the
end of the show is reached.

I'll look into JAlbum; I hope it will do all of those
things.

Thanks again.
