Suspect your problem may be change in frequencies since the conversion.
WPIX and WABC were both UHF during the HDTV transition but have both now
dropped back to VHF.
Check your VHF antenna and wiring.

Hello, I have an unique problem. I live barely 40 miles or less from
the empire state building transmitter, with no high rise buildings
between us. I also live in a 2 level private home that has an old
existing separate VHF antenna and a uhf antenna on my roofs chimney
Prior to the conversion box introduction, i was getting excellent
receptions of all my local channels, including HDTV. Since analog has
been discontinued, i have tried to use those antenna's via converter
box, and to my surprise, cannot get a couple of my local channels,
either with the vhf antenna or vhf one. ABC and WPIX are the missing
ones. NOW, I had bought an inexpensive $5 indoor antenna and get those
missing channels...the only flaw is that digital reception, regardless
of which antenna I use, has a habit of breaking up at inopportune
times, particularly at crucial dialogue moments. I was entertaining
the thought of replacing those old OTA's, but cannot find a repair
shop who will install a new one on my roof. I cannot do so..mainly i
suffer from vertigo and lack of a long ladder to reach the old ones. i
would assume that having the OTA type would give me a larger range as
compared to an indoor one. Why is it that i can get better reception
with that inexpensive indoor antenna than the existing OTA's? This
makes me skeptical on getting another OTA.
