I also looked at the many 32" sets; of which the vast majority on display
were 720p. From the expected viewing distance (across our bedroom) which I
could not duplicate in the store aisle, I'm also wondering whether the
difference between 720 and 1080 would be obvious on a 32" set. From 2 feet
away the 720p sets certainly looked like crap in the store.
My opinion is that if you are used to watching a 32" SD set, you're
going be disappointed in the size of a 32" wide screen display. The
actual height of an image on that wide screen will be quite a bit
shorter than you're used to.
The generally accepted formula for screen size is to take your SD size
times 1.3 for a close equivalent size in a wide screen. That puts you
close to a 42" and since your cabinet requires closer to 37" you might
want to keep looking for a 37" that suits you better. The throw away
brands (like our 1080p Vizio) can be had for less than $600 so I would
think in the $750-$800 range you should be able to find something you
like. Personally I'd keep looking for a 37" even if the reviewer
claims that "size doesn't matter".

Seems to me that this is one great reason to never buy an
entertainment center with a tv enclosure.
Well, it was not my sole decision to make :-)
Formerly that TV sat on a stand, and my wife desired a piece of furniture
that could house some of the other stuff in the area, as well as the VCr,
DVD players, etc. Having that situation as the starting point now, I'm
looking to make the best purchase without having to replace furniture,
too.
