I would say, to the last resort, use a unbalanced 3-way splitter, 3.5 db leg
to the cable modem and the 7db legs to the dvr and the desktop computer if
the cable signal levels permits it.

I got too fast in my typing, that is -0 to -10db of signal to the modem and
digital cable box.

It might work that way, putting the coupler's thru leg to the modem, but
then ,you have 6db of loss going towards the two-way splitter. Lets see
6db + 3.8 db= 9.8db loss, close to 10db of loss. Cable modems like to see
anywhere -0 to -10db at the input and if their is a digital box there, it
would like to see the same levels too. But, it all depends on the signal
levels from the street.

I need to split the cable coming in from the street (Time Warner CableIn my own opinion, depending on the location of your equipment, I would
NYC) 3 ways;
* SA8300 HD DVR
* Roadrunner cable modem
* ATI QAM tuner on desktop computer
What's the best 3-way splitter I could used for this application?
use a directional coupler, maybe a 6 or a 9db coupler. The tap leg of
the coupler to the modem and the thru-leg of the coupler to a two way
splitter for the dvr and desktop computer.
Don't know if I'd use a tap for this. [A tap is usually selected to
lower
an input signal to the 0 dB level.] If I *did* use a tap in this
instance,
I'd put the "thru leg" (1.5 dB insertion loss) to the modem. I doubt
that
splitting the 6dB loss of the tap would provide enough signal for the
cable
modem.
All in all, the unbalanced 1->3 splitter sounds like the best choice.
The
modem should be OK with a 3.5-4 dB insertion loss, and the other devices
should still be OK at 7.5-8 dB down.
I'm using basically the same setup (a TV instead of the ATI QAM tuner)
and
it works great. The balanced 1->3 splitter took too much signal away
from
my cable modem.
