Methinks that DirectTV won the bidding war and got exclusivity. Sucks for ABC but that's life. Highest bidder wins.

I have read elsewhere that the British Open is not being shot in HD,
but as in recent years, in widescreen 576i PAL format. Don't know if
DirecTV is getting their own HD feed or someone in the marketing
department messed up.

ABC has shown the event in the past few years in widescreen with a
direct upconversion from the BBC widescreen feed. It is not true HD, but
16:9 576/50i to 16:9 720p looks a lot better than a 4:3 480i
upconversion. A number of people will likely be fooled into thinking it
is HD, just not great looking HD.

It doesn't look as if it's even being covered in HD, as it's been relegated to the BBC2 SD channel, strange considering that the BBC recently transmitted the whole of Wimbledon fortnight in HD, I also can't see it in any of the Sky Sports HD programme listings, so I don't think that they can be getting a feed from them.
