If you don't know how much computer data you use to log on to the Internet per month, you may find out this summer.

Time Warner Cable is testing a new system that would charge customers for their Internet access based on how many gigabytes of data they use. Currently customers are charged a flat rate per month.

For customers who don't spend a lot of time surfing the net or downloading music and movies, the billing system may save them money. However, it could also mean others will have to pay more.

Downloading 250 songs uses up about one gigabyte. Each hour of HDTV you download is about eight gigabytes. Web surfing is a little harder to monitor because your computer is constantly downloading small amounts of data. If you go over the allotted data in a month, you will get a penalty of $1 per gigabyte.

I have been living with a cap for several years. I am at a research lab at a University. My wall connection to the University back bone is N $ per month with a cap. If I go over the cap my department pays extra for my usage. Not sure why there is a cap but my guess is to keep people from downloading movies and other large files at work? Or maybe it is to reimburse the University's for their internet cost? (No, I don't know what the cap is but my usage (my fixed IP address) is reported each month to my department.)

I think paying extra for big users will help reduce bandwidth waste. The idea that I can now download free movies (that I may or may not watch) all night instead of renting them hurts other lower bandwidth users.

At my home the cable company restricted me to 512kb because of the bandwidth on the main trunk line in my area. When ever anything is all you want for a fixed price there is abuse...go to an all you can eat buffet for fixed $ and watch people eat....

There you have it, a pay-as-you-go billing tier. From a provider's perspective, abuse the system all you want, so long as you pay for the damage, help yourself.

Ummm, I'm already paying. Is it MY fault that COMCAST goes with faster and faster speeds which use up more bandwidth FASTER, and then complain when your using it??? No of course not. They are worried that at some point you'll just pay for that Internet account and drop everything else. Get your Movies streamed, your TV programs streamed, Most all you can see already online. Internet costs have been dropping quite fast. Comcast and others are worried about loosing a lot of their income not just for TV service, but PPV, OnDemand and so forth. What these companies really expect is for you to be forking out a whole lot of money every month and hardly using any service, no matter what it is. It's bad enough they drop features that was included and you NOW have to pay for like newsgroup service. Now here they are complaining about Bandwidth when it was them that Increased the speed. Comcast even now is rolling out even faster speeds in some places, a whole lot faster. Really if there's a bandwidth problems, then why these much faster speeds yet? Your a sucker to believe anything they have to say, it's all about a greater profit margin. They're not happy where it's at. It's GREED and your buying into it. Hell you may be one of them.
