My parents got a Samsung DVD recorder a year and a half ago. My mom
recorded 1-1/2 hrs on it 3 times a week for a bout a year. Now, it won't
read any disk I try. I opened the cover to clean the optical reader, but
its lens is clean. I have the feeling the laser diode wore out since it
run out high power during recording. It seems kind of a short life.
Thanks
Consider her lucky. Mine started eating disks about 6 months after
purchase.

Looking at product reviews on various sites, people don't seem too impressed with any of the recorders.
So much for technology. I guess it is back to tape. A good VCR would last 10 years.

For adhoc time-shifting of TV programs, I not impressed with DVD recorders either - just too much fiddling, dirty lasers, delaminated disks, etc. Like many others, I used a VCR for years with good results - as good as a VCR can deliver. However, time and technology have marched along far enough now that a good DVR with a hard disk far outstrips any VCR for features and usefulness. Yes, a hard drive can break just like a tape cartridge, but is easy to replace - and will be the only fiddling if that ever becomes necessary.
