Hmmm...what model Bravia do you have? I tried it when I first got my

(an S series) over a year ago. Great 5.1 when I used the Bravia's

only 2-channel stereo otherwise.
Are you saying that you get stereo out of the Bravia's speakers when
you turn
the AVR off? That's odd.
I try playing with it again this weekend, but I thought I was quite
thorough.
It's a KDL-52XBR4. I feed it from the AVR via HDMI, where everything
else terminates via HDMI. I have a coax connection from the TV back
to the AVR to get digital audio. Just for grins, I tried it with
optical with the same results. If the AVR is turned off, the audio
automatically switches to the TV's internal speakers for stereo sound.
IIRC, I had to enable HDMI control for the auto speaker switching to
work. I get digital audio from the AVR regardless of the program
source, BD, Dish, or OTA.
OK. I have no HDMI connection to my AVR, so auto HDMI control is out of
the question.
Your paraphrased conversation with the Sony tech did highlight one point.
He said that the Dolby, etc., would be passed to the digital audio output
if THE INTERNAL SPEAKERS WERE OFF. This point needs clarification in the
manual. The S3000 series has a menu option Settings->Audio Options->TV
Speakers or audio system. I don't remember where I had it set for my tests.
I'll try it on both settings this weekend. I'm rewiring my A/V system
then. :)
You're right about the needed clarification, let's hope Sony gets a tag
up on that. My set's internal speakers work rather well, and they are
occasionally used if the AVR is not turned on. But as soon as the AVR
boots up, a message pops up on the TV saying the audio is now on
external - and as soon as the AVR figures out what codec it needs, it
syncs up. The AVR front panel display will indicate what codec is being
used for a short moment.
Passing Dolby doesn't mean Dolby 5.1.
