I just learned of these last night. I'd love to buy a universal remote that
actually works. I've tried one or two in the distant pass and they didn't
seem
to do EVERYTHING I wanted them to do. I was always using a remote that came
with
the component for something. I have a Sony Bravia LCD TV, 52", a Scientific
Atlanta 8300 DVR HD cable box, a Sony Blu-ray DVD player and for Christmas
I'm
getting a Sony micro stereo system, model CMT-BX1. Anyone have any experience
with these Logitech remotes? Since I've owned a computer, I've used Logitech
components with few, if any, complaints, so I have respect for the brand.
Thanks.
I have a Logitech Harmony 880. It's programmable, and will "read"
codes from existing remotes also. However, it's a real challenge to
program it. fortunately, their customer support is fantastic. Just
take down all the data from your devices you want to control (brand
name, model number, etc), and give them a call (toll free) and expect
to spend lots of time on the phone with them. They'll set it up just
the way you want it, and let you check it out.
I've had an 880 for a couple of years now, and while it can take a
while to "teach" the 880 codes that aren't in Logitech's data base,
it's mainly a stubborness issue. You've just got to stick with it and
"tweak" hear and there by teaching the device what it needs to know. I
like it and wouldn't trade it for anything. My wife had even learned
to use it, although once you have it set up, it's pretty a straight
forward "USE."
I agree that there's a ton of setup time involved. But that's
partially because I didn't realize how particular my setup goals were
until I started using the thing.
For example, I might switch from a DVD that's playing to see what's on
TiVo, and notice that the remote turned off the DVD player. Then I'd
say, "Oh, I don't want it to turn off the DVD player when I switch
activities," and head for the computer to tweak the remote's settings.
Or I might decide that I want a dedicated power-toggle button for my
Philips DVD players, so that requires another trip to the computer to
do some programming.
But, in the end, I attained my goal with my Logitech Harmony remotes:
to have the same model of remote, with the same configuration, in each
room where there's a TV.
And I would do it again, despite the programming effort involved.
