to use indoor antennas, and they were true to form -- a bit under half
the channels were acceptable -- if you didn't move around in the living
room. If you did move around, the reflections would wipe out the channels
if you stood int the "wrong" spots.
They were a bad idea in the 90's. The laws of electromagnetic waves
did not change.
Funny how OTA TV worked fine with indoor antennas for many, many
years--and all of the sudden they don't work, and it's the owner's fault
for trying to use something that worked fine for 50 years.
Your basic assumption is wrong. It didn't "work fine."
An indoor antenna never worked "fine" for me either. Even from a location on
a hill overlooking NYC and 12 miles distant, an indoor antenna only produced
audio buzz and ghosts on most channels. An outdoor antenna made a huge
As already mentioned, cable TV would not have been very successful if OTA
analog TV worked "fine" for most people. The only reason many subscribers
opted for cable was for a better picture, not for the huge selection of
stuff. Remember, cable only had a 30 channel maximum capacity at the time.
