I'd like to run my satellite box into my VGA input on my TV.
Will a component video to VGA cable work for this, or does
it only work in the opposite direction (computer to TV)?
I've seen some cables on ebay very cheap, but the auction
description refers to "hooking up your computer to a TV
through the component input", not the other way.
Thanks,
Chris
If your satellite receiver/DVR has HDMI output, you might
want to consider an HDMI switch.
The vga (D-15) input on my HDTV is scaled at 1:1 pixels. (So,
image size is set by changing the resolution on the attached
personal computer.)
I'm sure I've misunderstood. You would change the graphic
card's understanding of the attached monitor's resolution in
order to control image size? So that, for example, if you have
a 640x480 image to display on a 1920x1080 display, you'd ask the
PC/graphic card to change the monitor to 640x480 so that it
fills the screen in some awkward way?
Isn't scaling a function of the program generating the picture?
I suppose that my VGA to 1920x1080 display is also 1:1 because
that is the resolution used by the graphics driver. If I want
640x480 I can either a) display the image in a 640x480 window,
or b) ask the imaging software to "fill the window with the
image" in or out of aspect ratio.
For video, any number of programs provide flexible scaling,
either up or down. Some in pixel increments, some in a variety
of preprogrammed increments.
My input channels that have HDMI/DVI connections provide for
automatic upscaling or downscaling to better fill or not
overrun the display.
An older sattelite box might have a DVI output rather than
HDMI. DVI-to-HDMI cables are plentiful.
