Re: pre-programming recording of digital TV shows on different channels

Unlike many, I get my TV off antenna.  My current VCR can be programmed
to record from channel 2 at 7:00 PM and then record from channel 7 at 10
PM without manual intervention.  I'll no longer be able to do that once
the analog TV signals are gone without new equipment with dual ATSC
tuners.

In fact, once I put a digital to analog converter in the path between
the television and my VCR, I loose the ability to record one channel
while watching another unless I provide each (the VCR and the TV) with
separate converter boxes.  It can be done, but the result is remote
control overload (and conflicts).

Even though I am able to get an outstanding analog TV signal, the
digital signal is even better, and so I'd like to transition to
off-the-air digital recording now rather than later.  Does anyone make a
video recorder with dual ATSC tuners that allows you to record one show
while you watch another?

The TIVO2, as I understand it, has a capability to command the channel
setting of most cable boxes.  Has anyone heard of plans by anyone to
sell a ATSC digital tuner that can be commanded by a digital video
recorder such as a TIVO?

First off, the simplest (single tuner) solution is to get a DVD
recorder with a built in ATSC tuner. It works just like using a VCR.
I have a low end Panasonic EZ17 model that works well for me. I use
single use DVDs for stuff I want to save, and rewritable DVDs for
temporary stuff.

Second, the most enjoyable (single tuner) solution is a DVR. I use a
now discontinued Sony HDD250 HD DVR. It works a lot using a TIVO, but
without the fees. Echostar is supposed to be bringing out a
reasonably priced TR-50 this summer.

Third, as for commanding a tuner box, that's a limitation of the
recorder, not the tuner. If the recorder has an "IR blaster" type
remote control output, it can control any other device that has a
command set the recorder can produce. My Sony DVR can control both
the VCR and non-ATSC DVD recorder I tried it with.

Fourth, I am unaware of any dual tuner recorders other than the Tivo 3
or some form of Home Theatre Computer. I don't think I've heard of
any dual tuner converter boxes or tuners either.
