This is a wonderful summation I was trying to find in my searches.
I have yet to understand the channel bandwidth breakdown and
modulation scheme, but the ATSC site is very technical . I'm not
an engineer, and the discussion is above my head.
Do you know a site that simplifies the explanation?

No, there are no new frequency bands for digital ATSC TV broadcasts.
Currently digital is sent on the same channel range as analog: VHF 2 to
13, UHF 14 to 69. Around 1500 full power stations are broadcasting on
two channels: the analog one you know them by and digitally on another
channel. The digital broadcast contains channel mapping info (in the the
PSIP data field) which results in the ATSC tuner displaying the station
by the analog channel number as 4.1, 4.2, 7.1.
