The Sony HD CRTs are still the best picture ever made,
especially the Sony KD-34XBR960. People think because something costs a
lot
and the sales media tell them it's better, it must be better. They should
just trust their own eyes. Bring 2 friends and a truck, they weigh a ton.
Sony had to stop making them, otherwise how could they justify selling
something that costs 3 times as much, but has a worse picture.

The Sony 34 inch XBR CRT models had, for most of their product
lifetimes, a list price of more than $2000, about the same as for the
current MSRP for the Bravia 40 inch XBR LCD. It was only toward the end
of production that competition from flat panels drove the price down.
Adjusting for inflation, flat panels are now cheaper than CRTs used to
be.

And even if it were possible to make one, a 50 inch direct-view CRT
would not be practical. If they notice the slight difference in picture
quality (mostly black level) between a CRT and a modern flat panel, most
consumers are willing to sacrifice it for the benefit of a larger screen
or less weight and bulk (or both). They're not necessarily being duped,
they're just making a choice that's different from yours.

I bought my year old 30XS955 used for $500
One could only imagine what a 50" CRT would weigh!!!
