I was wondering if the OTA receiver is acceptable.

I've purchased two HVR 1600 because I just couldn't resist a sale price of
58.95. I'd rate the ATSC tuner as average, it's designed by and use by
Hauppauge exclusively as far as I can tell. It doesn't seem to pull in hard
to receive stations as well as some tuners can, but is fine if you don't
have problem channels. Also the resulting picture seems a little less sharp
then some tuners but not so much that it's a real issue.
I tune analog cable / OTA digital with mine and wouldn't hesitate to
recommend them as long as your not in a fringe area.
That sounds like a great price. Is that still available?

Got the second one in Feb. for that price from Circuit City, both came with remotes. The remotes are the ones that are geared for Hauppauge's software and won't work with Windows MC. Hauppauge software is ok for very light use, but if you want a good guide and DVR function you want to look for better software.
It seems they go on sale a couple times a year but it's best to check the deal sites to catch them on sale. I usually check PC Alchemy for tuner cards as they have good every day pricing and selection.

I don't have a HVR 1600 but I bought a PVR150 about 2 years ago and the software that came with it sucked. One of the worst applications I've seen. I never did get it working the way I wanted. I'm using composite cables coming from my digital cable receiver into the card. I found gb-pvr and use that instead for recording shows. I don't have a separate coax cable outlset for the card so that's why I daisy-chain it off the cable box for now.
