I just replaced my old rear projection HD TV with a new LCD. Not only
am very happy with the better picture; but am also happy to finally be
able to use a HDMI versus component video cables, better picture, less
of a mess.
I do have a question about the best way to hook up the audio though.
I have a STB and a XBOX that have optical audio outputs that I have
connected to my surround sound receiver. I used to also run my
component video cables though my receiver so that all source switching
could be done through the receiver. Unfortunately the reciever
doesn't have HDMI inputs, so I currently have to switch my video
through the TV and the audio through the receiver.
So my question is, is there a major difference between the sound that
goes through the HDMI cables compared to what I get from optical audio
cable? If there isn't a major (or any difference) between the sound
quality going through HDMI as compared to the optical cable; I could
just run one optical cable from the output on my TV to a single input
on my receiver, meaning one switch, but I don't want to lose surround
sound or sacrafice much quality.
Thanks for any help!
HDMI 1.3 supports the no-compression digital audio that can be found on some
BD and HD-DVD discs. Optical and coax SPDIF outputs are not allowed to carry
this ultra-high bandwidth signal - due to coding issues in the digital audio
processors in the receiving end and not with any actual bandwidth limits of
the media.
That said, I doubt if one in 10,000 adults can tell the difference between
the DTS or DD5.1 compressed and DD TrueHD uncompressed audio and then only
on the best of the best home theater sound systems.
But on the other hand, if you have a 8 channel DTS HD / TrueHD home theater
receiver/amp, HDMI is definitely the way to get the bits there.
