First of all, if I use S-Video or composite and "forget channel 4",
then on what channel do I watch the VCR?
You don't use a channel to watch the VCR. On the TV, you select which
ever input you have the VCR connected to.
Also, I should point out the following:
I've had my HDTV for only 4 or 5 days now. The problems that I
mentioned occurred during the first two days. However, for the last 2
days, there have been no problems, and the VCR is still there.
This is very weird.

Bypass the VCR, hooking cable directly to your TV. See if that improves
things.
