As opposed to what, 1080i, or 720p?

I haven't decided between 1080i or 720p. I was hoping to rule out
1080p first. I don't watch a ton of sports, so I am leaning towards
1080i. But like I said, I'm not sure yet.

Thanks.

Well, there are very few "1080i" native resolution sets these days.
CRTs and the Hitachu ALiS plasmas are the only ones that come to mind.
The choice is true 720p, 768p (many so-called 720p LCDs and 50" plasmas
are actually 1333x768), or 1080p. LCDs, all plasmas other than the
Hitachis, DLP RPTV, LCOS RPTV are all progressive displays, not interlaced.

The choice should not really based on whether you are thinking of
getting a HD-DVD or Blu-ray player, but on the screen size, your sitting
distance, cost, picture quality (color, black level, lack of motion
smear). Even for a 50" screen, at a typical living/rec room sitting
distance of 9' or 10', you will be hard pressed to see the difference
between screen with 1366x768 versus 1920x1080 pixels. If you are getting
a 40" to 46" size screen, a 720p or 768p resolution screen is fine. At
50", 1920x1080 does not buy that much, but it does fall into the
category of nice to have if it does not break the budget. At 58", 60" or
bigger, then I would recommend to go with the native 1080p display.

Remember all HD TVs will scale the input to the native resolution of
the screen. They take 480i, 720p, 1080i input and scale it up or down.
Some support 1080/24p input from HDMI, some still do not.
