When you look at the wide, wide world, using only your eyes, you do
not see a square. You see an image that is wider than it is high.
Thus we have widescreen in the movies, and now widescreen in the
videos. It is to immerse us more in the image of the wide world.
To be immersed even with an 80" set, you'd have to be no more than
about two feet from the middle of the screen. Otherwise, 4/3 is as
good as 16/9, neither will exceed your FOV at any normal viewing
distance, and conversely, both are just as immersive. Movies are
widescreen because a wider screen allows more seating, hence more
ticket sales without stacking audience like sardines on top of each
other. There's nothing inherently magical about widescreen. I'm afraid
Wes is correct about motivation of manufacturers in promoting
widescreen TVs (as well as computer monitors), it allows for an
inflated "inches" measure while keeping pixel count - and cost -
lower than more square arrangements. Similarly, glossy computer
screens allows for inflated contrast ratio specs, even though it's
practically impossible for any serious work to be done on a mirrorlike
screen. However, try to find a decent laptop with non-reflective
screen, if you can. I digressed, but my point is, hype, more than
reason, is what drives the success of many dubious products and
standards.
Since bigjimp has been promoted to idiot of the week the position of
idiot of the day is open. Are you trying for it with that post?
Inability to take disagreement without childish namecalling is not a
very geniuslike behaviour, methinks.
