HDTV+Surround sound.

I have a Sony HDTV monitor, 4 years old with only one DVI input. I feed it
with a Comcast cable box HDTV dual tuner, an HDTV OTA tuner, a Sony DVD
recorder/player and a VHS machine, via two remote switchers for the picture
inputs, and using two audio wires for the separate sound inputs. I have
just purchased both a Panasonic Blu-ray player and a Panasonic surround
system. I again use the "regular" audio two wire sound inputs for the
Blue-ray, using a splitter to enter the monitor. I find it necessary to
turn off the cable box when watching the Blu-ray as, if the cable box is on,
it's sound will also come out at the same time as the DVD's sound, but
that's no hardship.
I now wish to connect both the Blu-ray and the cable box audio outputs via
an optical cable, using an optical splitter, to join the two outputs into
one, to supply the Surround Sound unit with the audio. Is this feasible or
will the optical splitter mess things up? Would it be better to stick to
the same sort of audio wires I have been using up to the present time,
together with a "regular" audio wire splitter? So far, just trying out a
single optical output from only the Blu-ray machine into the Surround sound
machine, the quality of sound is dramatic, entirely matching the clarity of
the Blu-ray picture.
Thanks for any replies couched in beginners language.
