Hello,

I purchased a Toshiba HD-A3 HD DVD player, from BestBuy under
the deal they had running at $99. I've hooked it up to my Samsung
LN-S4041D 40" lcd tv via an HDMI cable. I've played the HD DVDs and
the picture quality is excellent. My problem is with regular DVDs. The
picture seems very pixilated compared to my Panasonic DVD player
(non-HD). I've tried setting the resolution to 720 as well as 420 and
while the picture improves as the resolution goes down, it still isn't
on par with the my Panasonic player. To rule out the cable as being
the issue I also tried the same composite cables on the HD DVD player
and the picture did not improve so I'm guessing it has something to do
with the upconversion. Has anyone else seen this issue either with
this player or older generations of Toshiba HD DVD players? I really
wanted an up conversion DVD player rather then a HD DVD player but
since they were both $99 I picked the extra functionality, which I'm
now regretting. Any help would be appreciated before I send the player
back.

I've had different issues with my new $99 HD-A2. Too much red push,
on both HDMI and component. Can't say I've noticed your
"pixelation" issue. I'll mention that CR (Dec) noted that these
Toshiba's rate only a "fair" in playing back *video-based* DVD's
(scores much higher on film-based DVD's). So you may want to see if
there is a diff between film and video DVD's on yours.

Also, I'd recommend querying at AVSForum. Though I've been reading
there and no one seems to be complaining about these machines
up-conversion. Most say it is quite good at the job.

Good luck!- Hide quoted text -

I think the pixellation issue is the machine trying to get a higher
definition by upconverting.
