Yes, they do a superior job via the analog outputs

looks like you dropped at least the last
sentence and a half. :)

anyhow...

with sound from DVD movies, one thing the OPPO
players are klunky about (at least, with
my very recent $230 unit) is not ID'ing when
Dolby Pro Logic is being used vs. DD 5.1

they both use the same front panel light,
and my AVR simply shows "EXT.IN" with no
insight into what the source encoding is

fastest way for me to check it, is switching
my mid level Denon AVR from EXT.IN to
fiber optic which is a one button push on the
AVR remote (with the Denon AVR set to "auto").
the AVR front panel then will generally
show one of maybe 6 different things on the
type of decoding it is doing: 1) DD5.1,
2) Dolby Pro Logic (L/R) cine, 3) Dolby
Pro Logic (L/R/C) cine, 4/5) repeat 2/3 with
PL replaced by PL II added, 6) DTS L/R and
L/R/C cine

one interesting thing is that Pro Logic cine
and DTS cine will sometimes be shown for the
same disk depending on the player (OPPO vs.
a decent older Panasonic DVD recorder)

one other klunky thing with my OPPO is that
to get the best sound when the movie only
has Dolby Pro Logic (any flavor) my AVR
gives equal decoding results to the OPPO
and it's a lot more convenient! coz for the
OPPO unit to give equal sound results, i have
to go into the OPPO's setup and change it
(the OPPO auto choice gives slightly
inferior results)

one pleasant surprise has been that the
movies that only have some variant of
Dolby Pro Logic sound sometimes actually
yield modestly decent surround sound

questions that i have for you are:

1) just how much better is the DD multichannel
sound that is on either of the new high def
movie disks? (i.e. vs. either DD5.1 or DTS5.1
that is on a standard DVD movie)

and 2) have you yet come across any high def
movies using DTS multichannel sound?
