will the picture quality of a DVD running in a computer be better if
it is connected to TV by S-Video? Or VGA?
Most modern video cards are capable of outputting via DVI, Component, VGA or
S-Video. S-Video would be the last connection to consider as it will
normally give less video quality then any of the other choices. DVI, HDMI or
DVI to HDMI would give you a digital signal to the set which may result in
better picture quality, not always and it may only be a little better.
Manufacturers use different hardware and firmware on the motherboard which
makes the quality from a given source different between manufacturers and
also at times different between models from the same manufacturer. While VGA
will certainly give you much better picture quality then S-Video it is good
to know you can experiment with the other types to see which is easiest to
setup with your video card and drivers. Setting up for the proper resolution
for your set and dealing with overscan maybe easier via one output over
another.
Current video cards have GPUs that handle video processing rather well and
I've found DVDs upconverted (scaled) to the native resolution of the display
from a PC very good
.
