So what do you do if you want to record more than 1 show at the same time?
More than 2? More than 3? Etc.

Currently, my Sony HDD250 HD DVR handles the bulk of the day-to-day
recording and playback for what my family usually watches. The DVD-R
is mostly for archiving movies for "rainy days at the cottage". The
DVD-R also provides the second recording for the rare times I want to
record two shows that only broadcast simultaneously. That's a maximum
of two recordings at a time, but so far, its all I've needed, since we
don't watch *all* that much TV anyway. (I'd guess we average no more
than 2 hours per day among the entire family of 4.)

And for less than $100 more, you can build a PC multi-ATSC tuner dvr that
will record and display in any format you want. Commercial products are
fine, but they are very expensive compared to what you get. They are also
very limited. With the price of PC components as cheap as they are now, it
doesn't make sense to me to limit ones self to commercial recorders that
have so many limitations.

My Sony box is likely to become nearly useless when it loses its
analog time signal in Feb. of 2009. Currently, I plan be modify one
of my PCs to become a DVR at that point. Why not now? My PCs get way
more use than my DVR and with several teenagers, crashes or reboots do
occasionally happen. The stand alone boxes have the advantage that
they don't support other uses and are likely to be running 24/7
without my system admin time. }:)
