Just thought I should also say I already know the DVD/VHS ATSC tuner is
ONLY SD and can't be used for HDTV. I can (and do)use my laptop with a
USB ATSC tuner for HD) I now tape (VHS) SD using an old SIR-T151 plugged
into the VCR. I am just trying to reduce the number of boxes (and
remotes)stacked around my HDTV.

Mike, I have the Panasonic DMR-EZ37K (DVD Recorder/VHS Recorder with
ATSC tuner). In summary, it's great. }:) Things I (and you might)
like:

1. Recording from VHS to DVD is a snap. And the unit does a nice job
of creating chapters everywhere the camera stopped and restarted.
2. Recording from DVD to VHS is a snap.
3. Very good ATSC tuner. Can record any analog, digital SD, or
digital HD OTA program to either VHS or DVD. (All recordings are down
converted for the intended media.)
4. High quality LP (4 hr) DVD recording mode. (6 hr, 4 hr, 2 hr, and
1 hr modes)
5. Flexible length record mode. Exactly fits a recording to a DVD.
6. Can use the ATSC tuner with any TV, analog, digital, SD, or HD to
view any OTA broadcast. (TV input is limited to analog and digital
SD; HD is down converted to 480p for digital TVs.) I can vouch that
the output looks great on both my analog and digital TVs.
7. If you use a DVD-RAM, the unit can function as a 6 hour DVR.
Supports "pausing" live TV, "chasing" playback of a recording in
progress, and watching a recording while recording a second broadcast
to the same disk.
8. Widescreen output to a 4:3 TV can either be horizontally compressed
to preserve the entire picture (people look tall and thin), or have
the ends cropped off so that the remaining picture looks normal.

The one thing I (and you might) not like:
1. Copywritten materials (DVD or VHS) cannot be copied. No backing up
my old Disney VHSs to DVD. }:(

Something I like (but you might not):
1. Recordings maintain aspect ratio. A widescreen (16:9) broadcast
makes a widescreen (16:9) DVD. A standard (4:3) broadcast makes a
standard (4:3) DVD.

My primary use of the unit is to provide a digital OTA tuner for my
old 32" analog TV and to create a library of DVD movies recorded from
OTA broadcasts. (DVDs made from HD broadcasts look just like
commercial DVDs.)

I highly recommend the unit.

Thanks for the great Panasonic review! (I love my Panasonic DVD player) I did not want to make assumptions about VHS recording or deal with returning the unit. Too bad about the copyright, I also have a bunch of old (but good shape) Disney tapes. Couldn’t you use another VCR for a copyrighted tape and send composite video and sound to the DMR-EZ37VK?
