So would we be in agreement that there are a large number of wauts that
surges can cause damage, ranging from direct strikes on anything coming
into a house (I know someone who had lightning come in on his LPG line)
in any mode (combinations of differential and common), to induced current
on so many things (like the speaker wires on my unplugged stereo system),
to direct strikes right into the house. And that's just lightning. There
are othersurgecauses such as MV power lines dropping down into LV power
lines, transformer faults, etc. And don't forget people who have built
up static charges (why I have 2 anti-static mats on my workspace at work).

I one time did build an experimental lightningsurgeprotectiondevice of my
own design. It protected a telephone line in a remote isolated location
that had a history of very destructive direct strikes (e.g. causing wiring
to become part of the air pollution). It consisted of a 6 inch wide 4 foot
long PVC pipe filled with steel wool and the phone line running down the
middle. A copper drain wire ran along the lower edge. A standard phone
line arrestor was located on the entry end. About a year after I built it,
I got called to come take a look at it. The wire leading in was gone. One
end of the PC was shattered and it's end cap was in tiny shreds. The inside
was entirely blackened and nearly all the steel wool was gone. What was
left were some clumps at the exit end that were mostly melted. The drain
wire had melt damage on the entry end. The modem that was connected to the
phone line was undamaged. It had cost $150 in parts and several hours of
time to build. I was amazed at the destruction. I've never built another
since then. It's just not practical for allprotection(certainly not for
power lines).

Not and expert and LPG(I can already see tom_w jumping up and down
getting ready to call me ignorant on such simply technologies that
have been around for so many years)

Yes I agree that ground current (some may prefer a term with surge or
lightning in it) can flow thru a conductive LPG pipe if the ends are
at different potentials i.e. ground loop.

This quote was to tom_w earlier in this thread, and I don't remember
him attacking me for it, so I think it's safe to repeat. "It's a
fact of life that if lightning hits your lightning rods, your ground
rods, or your tree 10 feet in your back yard, the surge is in your
house -- and that has to be dealt with."

Yes I remember reading a fairy-tale about that big wire falling on the
little wire and 100's of exploding electric meters flying off houses
30 feet away. The novelist is tom_w, if any body can't find it, let me
know, and I will be happy to use my limited technical knowledge and
move it over to this thread.

Hi ho, hi ho, it's back to work I go......
