So here is the question: which box HD receiver is the best and why? I'llThe best would be to build your own using a PC. You get the dvr function
be using it with my Sony XBR large screen tube TV (Not HD) but I want it
to receive HD for later upgrade. If it includes a DVR, all the better
but not required. Any and all civil feedback is appreciated.
plus you aren't limited in the amount of tuners you can use. You can
interface into any TV, network it into a very versitile system, etc, etc,
etc. Cost for a dual tuner system on the cheap is about $50 if you already
have a decent PC, or add about $200 if you need to buy one.
Do you have any suggestions for a low cost new PC? I found that the graphics
card makes all the difference between smooth motion and jerky motion; but
the cost can be a major percentage of the motherboard cost. What minimum CPU
speed do you use. How many PCI slots?
I started by using my socket 754 AMD 64 3000+ that runs 24/7 anyway. I
replaced the old GF2 with a cheap ($30) Nvidia FX5200. That worked fine.
The first frontend I put on the network was an old Duron 1600 with another
FX5200 card and that worked pretty good too using XvMC of the FX5200. It
owuld even display HD when clocked down to 1200MHz. The second frontend I
put on it was a 754 Sempron 2800+ with an FX5200. It worked fine too and
had a lot more leftover power than the Duron did. I still have e second
one but replaced the CPu with an A64 3200+ when they came down in price.
Not because I needed too. I just wanted too.:-) I also replaced both my
other systems with AM2 X2 3800+ systems using the built in video of the
nvidia 6100/6150 chipset. Both these work fine with the built in video. So
as for what board to use, I'd go for a cheap Geforce 6100 board with as
many PCI slots that you need. I've got an Asus M2N-whatever 6150 board
that was expensive that my wife bought and I'm not impressed. Fry's have
AMD X2's with MB on sale all the time for as little as $79. If you only
need 2 PCI slots these would work just fine and have plenty of cpu power.
Case and 550W PSU I bought for $26. What else you spend just depends on
how much storage space you want and how fancy you want to get. So there
you have it. You want at least a Duron 1600 cpu or equivilant as a bare
minimum. I'd suggest a socket 754 board or something newer though.:-)
I currently use two Technasat boards one for OTA and the other for FTA
(satellite). Technasat makes available an SDK that permits full access to
the boards which is helpful for custom needs. Will MythTV work with the
Technasat boards?
For storage use a 500GB SATA and 250GB IDE and quickly running out of space!
