medical displays - so expensive

I came across some medical LCD displays which looking around for monochrome
LCDs (yes, that can be done). These things are _so_ expensive compared to
TV LCDs and computer monitors. Prices are from $1000, mostly well above
$3000, to as high as $30,000. What is it they need in these that can't be
done in a typical computer monitor now (besides monochrome)?
This is one of the reasons medical care costs are so high. Other stuff
they buy in hospitals and doctors offices are also way way overpriced.
