I did exactly what you are looking to do. If you want a cheap way
out, there are a ton of DirectTV boxes that do what you want, and are
readily available on ebay. You don't need a dish or a subscription.
I recommend one of these three:

LG LSS-3200A,
Sony SAT-HD300,
Hughes HTL-HD

From what I understand, they are all the same box from LG. I got the
Hughes HTL-HD and I am very impressed with the functionality. there
are a lot of inputs and outputs on the box that allow you to do so
much with it. For example, I hooked mine to an old flatpanel computer
monitor via the DVI/VGA output. The remote control that comes with
the Hughes model can be programmed to control your TV and other
components. And, because they are DirectTV boxes, They are TIVO
compatible.
