so at this point i haven't a clue as to what it means
when PCM shows on the AVR's front panel
It means that you have a PCM source. Neither DD nor
DTS are PCM.
for the moment, i'm taking it to mean
that audio stream doesn't have any real
surround encoding
fwiw, with a digital audio cable straight
from my ATSC STB TV tuner, i sometimes see
only DD on the front panel of my AVR
which suggests that OTA ATSC TV isn't
restricted to only some variant of Pro Logic
sounds slightly better too
fwiw#2, my AVR's remote has a surround button
and a stereo button and it's been interesting
to hear the differences when playing a standard
stereo CD
but with the sound itself i'm talking minor
differences; i mean, all of this TV/movie
audio is compressed
with DVD the DD5.1 tends to be slightly better
than the DD2.0 (fidelity wise) but the surround
is noticeably better; and with DTS5.1 there's
a clear edge over the DD5.1 on both fidelity
as well as the surround
bill
