Re: Sharp Aquos display problem with cable box

I recently purchased a Sharp Aquos 46" LCD 1080P and upgraded my
Comcast service to include HD. The Comcast box I got is the Motorola
DVR box. In an attempt to simplify operation for the rest of the
family (there are remotes for the TV, DVD, DVR and Bose sound system)
I've opted to utilize the Bose remote for all components as it seemed
to be the most intuitive as well as being the only remote that had the
codes for all the components I have listed.

While configuring the remote I encountered an interesting problem that
has to do with how the picture displays. First, the view mode (for
those familiar with the Sharp) I was viewing in was the "Stretch"
mode. This is the initial setting and initially when viewing HD it
filled the entire screen (maybe a thin stripe top and bottom but hard
to tell) and the clarity and picture nothing short of amazing for
someone new to 1080P.

Now for the problem. I was going through the different HD channels
available on Comcast and going back and forth to the "guide" when all
of a sudden the picture was "boxed" in. I rechecked the view mode and
it was still in stretch. I selected the "S. Stretch and the picture
filled the screen again but the picture didn't seem as clear and some
of the picture was outside of the screen area. I went back to
"Stretch" and the picture and clarity returned to what it was before.

The Stretch, S. Stretch, Zoom, side bars, and dot for dot options
are set by the AV Mode.

The combination of input source (TV, Input 1, Input 2, Input 3, Input
4), signal mode (480i, 720p, 1080i, etc.), affect the AV Modes. Firt
off, not all the modes are available in all forms - you cannot run dot
for dot with a 720p source, for example.

When you change from a 720p channel to a 1080i channel, the options
change, and it returns to the remembered option for this mode. You
change to a 480i channel, and it goes to the remembered mode for 480i.

The manual describes all these modes but doesn't remind you that the
set remembers the av mode chosen for each input format (and input).

If you switch to a different input, such as input 2, the settings are
different from those using the tuner - so 480i can be Stretch on an
input hooked to a DVD player, but Side Bar for the tuner watching 4:3
channels.

By the way, I recommend switching to "user mode" which provides the
different settings for different inputs, and disables the most annoying
dynamic contrast.

I do not know how to fix the dismal gamma that turns the visible
detail in shadows on my crt into dark shadows on the LCD.
