A very interesting report came out today from DisplaySearch:
Nearly one in four LCD televisions shipped worldwide in the third
quarter of 2006 were not manufactured by the company whose name is on
the front of the set according to a recent report by DisplaySearch.
Only one in four? I'd expect it to be closer to three in four. There
are lots of brands out there and only a handful of manufacturers.
companies the public think they are. i.e. RCA, GE, Westinghouse, etc.
RCA consumer division was bought by Thomson products of France around 1990.
Semiconductors went to Harris, and GE kept NBC. The broadcast division may
also have gone to Harris.
GE obviously still exists, but they sold off the consumer small appliance
and TV business. TVs went to Thomson, and mixers, etc went to Black &
Decker. They weren't ever very big in semiconductors, but I think that went
to Harris.
Westinghouse Electric was bought by British Nuclear Fuels, and subsequently
Toshiba. They had not made a TV set in 30 or 40 years, and the present
Westinghouse TVs and the like are marketed by a California startup that
obtained permission to use the Westinghouse name from British Nuclear. I
don't think they have any manufacturing capability.
AS for LCDs, most panels are made by LG, Samsung, and Sharp.
Additions and corrections are welcome.
